New Mexico Historic Sites announces the grand opening commemoration event for the permanent interpretive exhibition “Bosque Redondo: A Place of Suffering…A Place of Survival” on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site. A full day of events is planned, including welcome speeches, music, and cultural dance performances from Navajo (Diné) and Mescalero Apache (Ndé) community members, activities for children, and a complimentary barbeque lunch for the first 500 guests made possible by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and the Friends of Bosque Redondo Memorial. A Navajo rug and Native American art auction will be held in the afternoon. Tribal partners, VIP guests, all the collaborative partners, and the public are invited.

The New Mexico Museum of Space History is pleased to welcome Leah Tookey, Curator of History at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, as the guest speaker for the Launch Pad Lecture on Friday, April 1. Home on the Range: From Ranches to Rockets tells the story of the ranchers who were forced off their land, and the military and defense industry that would turn it into a military complex. The Launch Pad Lecture begins at 9:00 am on the museum’s first floor and is free to the public.

A new exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art surveys how modern artists brought new ideas to the American Southwest and drew upon the region for inspiration. "Western Eyes: 20th Century Art Here and Now" explores how artists as diverse as T.C Cannon, Georgia O’Keeffe, Fritz Scholder, and John Sloan responded to the distinctive cultures and environment of the Southwest with styles informed by national and international trends. The exhibition also highlights the museum’s role in fostering these developments in New Mexico. On view March 12, 2022 through January 8, 2023.

A team of paleontologists from the U.K. (Dr. Simon J. Braddy) and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (Research Associate Allan J Lerner and Curator Dr. Spencer G. Lucas) have published an article in the latest issue of the scientific journal Historical Biology describing a new species of giant sea scorpion (eurypterid) discovered in New Mexico.

The New Mexico History Museum is pleased to present Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs, a photographic history of our state’s many hot springs. This exhibition explores well-known resorts as well as lesser-known hot springs. Ponce de Leon, Montezuma, and Faywood are a few among many areas whose history will be addressed. The nearly 90 photographs range from the late 19th century through the 1980s and document the evolution of how many of these springs were used and developed. Museum visitors will also see the stark change in how people dressed (or not) when they visited and enjoyed these hot springs. New Mexico attracted many people seeking respite from tuberculosis and other ailments, and they typically frequented hot springs to aid in this relief. Opening Friday, March 18, the exhibition runs until September 4, 2022.

The Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts and the NM Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) seek to commission up to 26 New Mexican artists to create coloring page illustrations for a New Mexico-themed activity book. The project will create a multi-lingual, multi-cultural New Mexico-themed alphabet coloring book to further early childhood literacy. The application deadline is March 18, 2022.

The Department of Cultural Affairs recently completed a $400,000 major restoration project at The Lincoln Historic Site, located in Lincoln, NM. Part of the responsibilities of the New Mexico Historic Sites division is to face new and intriguing challenges as it cares for its portfolio of properties. One of the most recent such instances relates to the emergence of bats inside the historic Tunstall Store at the Lincoln Historic Site during this process.

The New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary marked a major construction milestone on Monday, January 31, 2022, as the construction crew hoisted one of the final structural beams by crane into place. The topping off ceremony is a long-standing construction tradition commemorating the completion of a building’s steel structure. In keeping with COVID-19-safe protocols, a small group gathered to sign their names on the final steel beam then watched as it was lifted into place late Monday afternoon.

This exhibition of sixteen prints from the museum’s collection, augmented with two promised gifts, concentrates on the photographs that Adams made around 1932, before he became a household name. Ansel Adams: Pure Photography will open January 29 through May 22, 2022, in the Beauregard Gallery of the New Mexico Museum of Art.
