Dr. Sharyn Udall will give a free lecture entitled “Agnes Pelton and Georgia O’Keeffe: Natural and Mystical Impulses” on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 1 p.m. at the New Mexico Museum of Art. This lecture is collaborated with the traveling exhibition, Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist, currently on view at the Museum of Art.
An activity station connected with the exhibition has three opportunities to engage - perfect for children, families, or anyone visiting Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – The New Mexico Historic Preservation Division is joining forces with Mu Alpha Nu Anthropology Club from Eastern New Mexico University and Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark (NHL) to host the 2019 New Mexico Archaeology Fair, Celebrating 90 Years of Archaeological Research at Blackwater Draw NHL. Free and open to the public, the Archaeology Fair will be held Saturday Oct. 26 at Blackwater Draw NHL, near Portales.

Visitors to the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces are now greeted by a beautiful, new sculpture in front of the Bruce King Building. The life-sized bronze by Albuquerque artist Reynaldo “Sonny” Rivera captures the determination and skill of barrel racer Amberley Snyder. Rivera, a native of Mesquite, N.M., read an article in Horse & Rider Magazine about Snyder’s inspirational story of competing in the sport she loves after being paralyzed from the waist down in a vehicle accident when she was 18.

The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) presents From Combat to Carpet: The Art of Afghan War Rugs, opening January 12, 2020 and running until August 30, 2020. From Combat to Carpet is a traveling exhibition curated by Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins and features more than 40 handwoven rugs with war-related iconography collected over the past forty years.

On October 3, 8, and 9, 2019 consignors may make appointments to contribute pieces from private collections for the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture annual Native Treasures Collectors’ Sale. Walk-in donations and consignment will be accepted on October 8 and 9, 2019. Guidelines and forms are available on the MIAC website. Forms must be completed before the intake process begins.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – They came from all over, and through back-breaking manual labor, railroad workers transformed the United States and impacted millions of lives. When the railroad came to New Mexico in 1879, it brought thousands of job opportunities for local people from rural villages, reservations, and larger towns. In addition to the homegrown workforce, the railroad also brought immigrant Chinese, European, and Mexican laborers to New Mexico. On a national scale, by the time women were granted the vote under the 19th Amendment in 1920, one out of every 50 citizens worked for the railroad; this number increased exponentially during the US’ involvement in World War II.

Each year the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) works with schools and community organizations to host an exhibit of ofrendas (altars) in celebration of Día de los Muertos. Ofrendas will be placed in the Domenici Education Building and the Roy E. Disney Performing Arts Center on the NHCC campus

Girard: Culture x Design is a two-day symposium examining the creative force of Alexander Girard, a luminary of modern design whose close engagement with traditional arts, whimsical toys, and everyday objects from around the world created a broad and influential body of work. Symposium speakers and moderated discussions will examine Girard through various lenses in order to create a more complex and textured understanding of his place in the history of American design as well as explore his approach to collecting and exhibiting global material culture. The symposium will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on October 18 and 19, 2019, at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA), Santa Fe, New Mexico, an appropriate location for a multi-faceted examination of his creative process, as Girard had a long-standing relationship with the museum and made Santa Fe, New Mexico, his home for more than forty years.

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) -- Sandia Performing Arts Company presents the world premiere of Rosalie’s Magic Rocks, a tale of how life changes for an enterprising young Latina. This story of coming of age in Hispanic New Mexico, a Latino version of Tom Sawyer, is based on real-life events.
Rosalie’s Magic Rocks will be performed in the Wells Fargo Auditorium on Friday & Saturday nights from September 27 to October 6 at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday performances at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person, with a $2 discount for seniors, students and NHCC members. Tickets are $12 for children 12 and under.

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture is pleased to welcome Diego Romero (Cochiti Pueblo) for his third exhibition at the museum titled, Diego Romero vs. the End of Art, opening October 6, 2019 until January 4, 2021. The exhibition will be the largest assemblage of Romero’s work, exploring his reflections on Native identity and history. Romero’s personal style combines Cochiti pottery techniques with graphic art influences, which together, create a narrative combating an allusive villain, the End of Art.

The New Mexico State Library has chosen The Storm Runner, written by J. C. Cervantes, a Rick Riordan Presents book, published by Disney Hyperion, as the book which will represent New Mexico in the Parade of the States at the 2019 National Book Festival. J.C. Cervantes is also the author of the critically acclaimed book, Tortilla Sun. Ms. Cervantes lives with her family in New Mexico. When told The Storm Runner would be representing the state of New Mexico at the National Book Festival this year, she said, “That’s wonderful news! Thanks so much!”
The Storm Runner provides readers with an excellent description of New Mexico’s landscape and demonstrates how a youthful imagination can transform those landscapes into a place of wonder and adventure, which many New Mexican’s still do into adulthood. It is a great coming of age story. Any young reader will be able to relate to the emotional concerns of Zane, the main character, who as he finds his strength, displays those basic human concerns about fitting in, being liked, and finding your path in the world. The next book in the series, The Fire Keeper, will be released in the fall.
The National Book Festival, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress, is now in its nineteenth year. This popular event celebrating the joys of reading and lifelong literacy will be held on Saturday, August 31st in Washington, D.C. Deanne Dekle, the Youth Services and Outreach Coordinator for public and tribal libraries across the state and Matthew Benbennick, the Reference & ILLiad Librarian at the State Library will represent New Mexico at the Festival.
