    New Mexico Museum of Art Announces "Patrick Nagatani: Invented Realities" Beloved Albuquerque Resident and Teacher was a Leading Figure in the Directorial Style of Photography

    A survey of work by the Albuquerque-based artist and teacher Patrick Nagatani (1945-2017) that highlights the artist’s creative process and use of visual storytelling across his career opens at the New Mexico Museum of Art on May 26, 2018 and will be on display through September 9, 2018. A leading figure in the “directorial photography” style, Nagatani often constructed complex tableaus and detailed models for the camera to bring attention to truths that are often hidden in plain sight.

    Light in the Desert Photographs from the Monastery of Christ in the Desert By Tony O’Brien Opening at Governor’s Gallery

    (Santa Fe, New Mexico) – It was 1968 when Trappist monk Thomas Merton visited the Benedictine monastery Christ in the Desert, near Abiquiu, New Mexico, shortly after it was founded. Merton’s writings and photographs of the experience brought the secluded monastery to the attention of a wider community of people seeking sanctuary and spiritual inspiration.

    An exhibition of this work, Light in the DesertPhotographs from the Monastery of Christ in the Desert by Tony O’Brien opens at the Governor’s Gallery on the fourth floor of the New Mexico State Capitol Building, Friday, April 27.

    Party Like It’s 1599! Adult Renaissance Dance Party April 20 at Museum

    (Albuquerque, New Mexico) - Dress as a Renaissance character, learn crafts and dances from the period, and party the night away! Tickets are now on sale for the Reliving the Renaissance, a themed-costume adult dance party in conjunction with the Da Vinci—The Genius exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS). All exhibits will be open including Da Vinci—The Genius.

    For this special Renaissance evening, the NMMNHS has joined forces with the New Mexico Philharmonic, the Marshall Performing Arts Conservatory, and the Society for Creative Anachronism. Reliving the Renaissance happens Friday, April 20, from 6-11 p.m. at the Museum.

    Water is Life in New Mexico: Museum Collaborates on Statewide Groundwater Project

    (Albuquerque, New Mexico) – The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) has joined the New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources in a statewide collaborative groundwater monitoring network. The Museum will host one of the many monitoring locations for the project and serve as an important educational outlet.

    Water shortages have been commonplace in communities across New Mexico over the past several years and the state lacks sufficient groundwater level measurements for many regions. In an effort to protect the groundwater resource, this new community-oriented program aims to reach out specifically to farmers, ranchers and well owners, as well as municipalities to share data and information.

    The Our Groundwater Future project will be launched Monday, April 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the NMMNHS’s Kiwanis Learning Garden. The project goal is to work with well owners and operators in rural communities to inform and train them on groundwater measurements. The Learning Garden is located across 18th Street from the museum’s main entrance. A monitoring well for the project will be drilled April 10.

    Crafting Memory: The Art of Community Peru — Places of Memory Featured Artists Tell Stories of Those Who Disappeared

    (Santa Fe, New Mexico) – Three Peruvian artists whose work is featured in the current exhibition Crafting Memory: The Art of Community in Peru will spend an afternoon at the Museum of International Folk Art giving talks and meeting patrons on Sunday April 8 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

    The featured speakers, Adelina Garcia, Wari Zarate, and Rosalia Tineo are three Quechua artist activists whose work is at the forefront of the fight for truth and reconciliation in the wake of the 20 year internal armed conflict that claimed the lives of nearly 70,000 Peruvians between 1980 and 2000. Using traditional folk arts of the region, they tell the stories of the disappeared.

    New Mexico’s Bosque Redondo Memorial Commemorates 150th Anniversary of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo & Formation of the Navajo Nation

    (Fort Sumner, New Mexico) – This summer marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo between the United States Government and the Navajo Nation. This anniversary will be commemorated through a series of events at the Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site in eastern New Mexico. Ceremonies June 8 & 9, 2018, will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of this important site and the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of 1868.

    During the June commemoration, patrons will be able to view plans for the new upcoming exhibit, participate in our ceremonial activities and enjoy tribal dances. Native artisans will be on-site offering traditional jewelry, weavings and foodstuffs. On June 9, a 7 mile walk from the historic site to Fort Sumner High school will honor the memory of The Long Walk

    Farm & Ranch Museum is ’Dressed for the Occasion’ Exhibit opens April 5

    Women’s clothing from the 1870s to the 1930s -- what was visible and some layers that were not always visible -- is the subject of a new exhibit at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. “Dressed for the Occasion” focuses on clothing for “everyday” as well as special occasions like weddings, funerals, and baptisms. The exhibit opens with a free reception from 5-7 p.m. on April 5. Costumed interpreters will be at the reception and refreshments will be provided.

    Dig Giusewa: Exploring Jemez Origins and Acculturation at Jemez Historic Site

    Starting Aug. 16, come see what is buried beneath your feet at “Dig Giusewa!”

    In partnership with the Friends of Coronado Historic Site and the Pueblo of Jemez, New Mexico Historic Sites is pleased to announce a new program at Jemez Historic Site, entitled “Dig Giusewa.” Running every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday between Aug. 16 and Oct. 6, archaeologists, tribal members, and volunteers will work to systematically excavate a five-by-five-meter area just north of the Visitor Center.

    Wonders on Wheels Mobile Museum to visit Jemez Pueblo & Roundhouse

    (Santa Fe, New Mexico) – The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs mobile museum Wonder on Wheels (WoW) is on the road with a new display for 2018. The featured exhibit from the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) is entitled Indigenous New Mexico: Sharing the Wonders of Our World.  Among the venues WoW visits in the next few weeks are Jemez Pueblo and the Roundhouse. 

    Students and teachers at Jemez Day School will get a chance to experience the MIAC exhibit when the retrofitted RV visits Jemez Pueblo. WoW will be at Jemez Day School, 245 Day School Road, Jemez Pueblo Tuesday, March 27, from 8:15-9:45 a.m.

    Lawmakers, legislative staff, and the public are invited to visit Wonders on Wheels Monday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. when it will be parked on Don Gaspar outside the State Capitol building

    Paranormal Researchers share stories at Fort Stanton & Lincoln Historic Sites After Dark Events

    (Santa Fe, New Mexico) – During 160 years in operation, Fort Stanton’s served as an Army post, tuberculosis sanatorium, internment camp and correctional facility.  With infamy gained through the Lincoln County Wars, and the lives of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett, the history of Lincoln, New Mexico is riddled with acts of revenge, vigilante justice and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886, more than 50 people met a violent end along the main road.

    Reports of paranormal activity in these two storied southeastern New Mexico Historic Sites dates back more than a century. Spine-tingling tales from former workers and people who have had unusual experiences at these and other New Mexico venues are being preserved by the Lincoln County Paranormal Society (LCPS).

The new bookmobiles will serve two of the three routes covered by the State Library – the Northeast Route of the Cimarron office, and the East Route out of Tucumcari.
