The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) announces the discovery of Gordodon, a new sail-backed reptile based on an incomplete skeleton found in Permian age (about 300 million years old) rocks near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The unique structure of the skull, jaws and teeth of Gordodon indicate it was a surprisingly specialized plant eater (herbivore). Previously, such specialized plant eating was not known in reptiles older than about 200 million years

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) - Following World War I, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) was established to enhance the overseas military cemeteries for the fallen and to erect memorials to the combat accomplishments of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). In 1925 ABMC retained Paul Philippe Cret as their consulting architect. He subsequently guided every aspect of their ambitious construction program, including designing the permanent headstones used for overseas American burials. This illustrated lecture will examine Cret’s crucial role in overseas military cemetery design after World War I as well as ABMC’s monument building program

For the fifth consecutive year, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture will be partnering with the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum to co-host HomeGrown: A New Mexico Food Show and Gift Market.
HomeGrown will take place on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. Admission to HomeGrown is $5 per vehicle, and the first 100 vehicles at the event each day will receive a free burlap shopping bag.

(Jemez Springs, New Mexico) -- This summer Jemez Historic Site hosted its first major archaeological excavation in over 50 years. The project, entitled “Dig Giusewa,” was part of New Mexico Historic Sites award winning Public Archaeology Program. The project was undertaken to address long held questions about the Jemez people involving their origins and how their lives changed after the arrival of the Spanish. Over an eight week period, New Mexico Historic Site Staff, University of New Mexico Students, Friends of Coronado Historic Site, and Jemez Pueblo Tribal Members excavated a large room just north of the Visitor Center in Giusewa, or San Jose, Pueblo.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – New Mexico achieved statehood just two short years before the Great War broke out in Europe in 1914. Recruitment in the nascent state was aggressive, and New Mexicans stepped up to serve in large numbers. By the end of the first World War, New Mexico ranked fifth in the nation for military service, enlisting more than 17,000 recruits from all 33 New Mexican counties. The war claimed the lives of 501 New Mexicans. The global conflict ended with the signing of the armistice Nov. 11, 1918.
