Hasson will recount the fascinating story of the creation of a new alphabet, of bringing the script into the digital world, and its spread at an astounding rate. Mr. Hasson’s serendipitous meeting with Ibrahima Barry, one of two brothers who invented and implemented a unique alphabetic writing system in present-day West Africa is the topic of the presentation on this remarkable endeavor.

Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner | May 11, 2018
(Fort Sumner, New Mexico) –Two full days of activity are planned at the Bosque Redondo Memorial Site at Fort Sumner June 8 and 9 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Navajo Treaty of 1868, the formation of the Navajo Nation, and the 50th anniversary of the Fort Sumner Historic Site The events include a seven-mile walk June 9 from the memorial to Fort Sumner High School, oral histories from direct descendants of Long Walk survivors, tribal dances and a rare opportunity to see the long-missing copy of the Treaty.
“The two-days of events at Bosque Redondo are scheduled to follow Navajo vice president Jonathan Nez’s 400-mile run from Fort Sumner to Window Rock and the Navajo Nation’s commemoration events of the Treaty anniversary and the Dine’ people’s return to their homelands,” said Patrick Moore, Director of New Mexico Historic sites which oversees the Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) -- The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo, signed June 1, 1868, by displaying an extraordinary wool rug woven in tribute to the Long Walk. Created in the early 1900s, the rug is an impressive 9 ft. by 15 ft., last displayed at MIAC in 1996.

The New Mexico Museum of Art is pleased to announce an exhibition about the work and working methods of Frederick Hammersley will be on view from May 26, 2018 through Sept. 9, 2018. Frederick Hammersley: To Paint without Thinking looks at the artist’s meticulous record keeping as a significant aspect of his practice, and features over 60 objects, pairing items from Hammersley’s archives with seven paintings, including the New Mexico Museum of Art’s recently conserved Couplet, #15 1965(1968), and The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens’ See saw, #3 1966. It also includes dozens of other works, including lithographs, silkscreens, and computer drawings from the collections of The Huntington, New Mexico Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Palm Springs Art Museum, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

The new showpiece is the sculpture, "Sodbuster, San Isidro," by the late Luis A. Jiménez, Jr. The sculpture will be presented at a reception from 5-7 p.m. on May 18. The free reception includes hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, and is part of the weeklong celebration of the museum’s 20th Anniversary.

The New Mexico State Library has announced the state level champions of the 2018 Letters About Literature competition. This annual writing contest for young readers in grades 4 through 12 is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and is administered nationally by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.
Letters About Literature encourages young readers in grades 4 -12 to read a book and write a personal letter to the author explaining how the book changed or shaped their perspective on themselves or the world. The New Mexico State Library manages the state level program and submits a champion to the national competition for each of the three levels.
Kaelyn Siefkes, a fifth grade student at Estancia Valley Classical Academy in Moriarty, is the Level 1 champion. Kaelyn wrote her letter to Rachel Renee Russel about her series, The Dork Diaries.
Allie Vice, a seventh grade student at Eisenhower Middle School in Albuquerque, is the Level 2 champion. Her letter is addressed to Out of My Mind author, Sharon M. Draper.
Steffen Ortiz, a tenth grade student at East Mountain High School in Sandia, is the Level 3 champion. Steffen wrote his letter to Markus Zusak about his book, The Book Thief.
From the 45 New Mexico state finalists, the state judges selected three champions, three second place writers, three third place writers, and six honorable mention letters. Champions, second and third place winners, and honorable mention recipients were honored at the State Capitol on May 4 at 1:30 PM. Secretary Gonzales congratulated the students and the state champions read their letters aloud.

The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and the Bosque Redondo Memorial, a New Mexico Historic Site and an International Site of Conscience, announce that the third and last-remaining copy of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo has been found in Manchester, Massachusetts. The authenticity of the 150-year-old, 17-page, handwritten document was confirmed by the National Archives last month, its owner stated.

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) – The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) has joined the New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources in a statewide collaborative groundwater monitoring network. The Museum will host one of the many monitoring locations for the project and serve as an important educational outlet.
Water shortages have been commonplace in communities across New Mexico over the past several years and the state lacks sufficient groundwater level measurements for many regions. In an effort to protect the groundwater resource, this new community-oriented program aims to reach out specifically to farmers, ranchers and well owners, as well as municipalities to share data and information.
The Our Groundwater Future project will be launched Monday, April 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the NMMNHS’s Kiwanis Learning Garden. The project goal is to work with well owners and operators in rural communities to inform and train them on groundwater measurements. The Learning Garden is located across 18th Street from the museum’s main entrance. A monitoring well for the project will be drilled April 10.
