(Albuquerque, New Mexico) -- New Mexico’s Bisti Beast will be welcomed home with Japanese performances and food at a celebration June 22 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. The museum’s newest attraction, the Bisti Beast is a robotic dinosaur based on the skull found in the Four Corners area of New Mexico. The robotic dinosaur was made in Japan and is a permanent exhibit at the museum. (*see below for media resources)

Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner | May 30, 2019
(Santa Fe, NewMexico) — The Bosque Redondo Memorial, a New Mexico Historic Site, International Site of Conscience and division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, as part of its ongoing partnership and exhibit collaboration, assisted with the transfer of the third and last-remaining original copy of the Navajo Treaty of 1868 to the Navajo Nation on May 24, 2019. This copy of the treaty has been on display at Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site since June 6, 2018, as part of the 150th commemoration of its signature. The subsequent donation of the treaty took place May 29, 2019, at 9 a.m. at the Navajo Nation Museum, Window Rock, Arizona, with great reverence and ceremony.

The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) presents Música Buena: Hispano Folk Music of New Mexico from October 6, 2019, to March 7, 2021. The exhibition explores nearly four centuries of inherited musical styles, which developed into regionally specific traditions. Música Buena articulates the roots of New Mexican music through video, sound, instruments, and live performance.

The Mid-Century Santa Fe collaboration is proud to announce the 2019 Student Art and Design Competition award recipients. The competition honors Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee), Alexander Girard, and Georgia O’Keeffe’s influence and contributions to New Mexico’s textile, fashion, and visual art landscape. Mid-Century Santa Fe collaborators have selected winners in each of the three categories, as well as Best in Show from a pool of New Mexico’s full-time college students. The winning works will be on view from August 1 to August 20, 2019, in the Joan and Clifford Vernick Auditorium at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA).

The floral depictions, graphite and watercolor on paper, signify the long-standing friendship between O’Keeffe and Alexander and Susan Girard. The Mid-Century Santa Fe collaboration celebrates this friendship by hosting a series of activities and programs throughout the summer.

The Museum of International Folk Art presents a lecture by Lynne Cooke, senior curator for special projects in modern art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Cooke’s recent exhibition Outliers and American Vanguard Art furthered the conversation about self-taught or “outsider” art, offering a more inclusive art historical narrative that integrates the contributions of often marginalized artists to the narrative of American visual culture. Her talk, titled “Boundary Trouble: Outliers and American Vanguard Art,” will take place in the museum’s Vernick Auditorium on Saturday, June 15, 2:00 pm to 3:00 p.m. It is free with museum admission.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) - The New Mexico State Library has identified this year’s statewide Summer Reading theme, A Universe of Stories, to tie into the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Public libraries around the state will be offering space-themed programs as well as offering incentives encouraging children, teens and adults to read all summer long.
Participating in a summer reading program has been proven to help students prevent the “summer slide” which is a significant drop in test scores between school years. Last year, more than 94,000 people participated in a summer reading program in New Mexico.

The image, titled, "Mi abuela tiene un caballo blanco/My grandma has a white horse," was commissioned by the NHCC and Artful Life and is being considered under the "New Talent" category.

Garrett as interim director of the New Mexico Museum of History and Palace of the Governors. Garrett’s career has focused on management of cultural resources, environmental design, community planning and organizational management. He retired from the National Park Service after 26 years of service, bringing a strong background as a manager and architect, with significant experience with historic structures. A third generation New Mexican, he returned home following retirement, serving as a two-term Doña Ana County Commissioner (2010-2018). Garrett has a strong commitment to public engagement and public-private partnerships.

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) will say goodbye to two exhibitions, Hweeldi: The Woven Tribute and Lifeways of the Southern Athabaskans while celebrating its newest accolade from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 2, 2019. The celebration will offer light refreshments as well as hands-on activities for children. Guest speakers Oliver Enjady (Mescalero Apache), Vernon Petago (Jicarilla Apache), and Vida Vigil-Garcia (Jicarilla Apache) will discuss the Southern Athabaskan language at 2:00 p.m. with closing comments from Joyce Begay-Foss (Diné), and Dinéhtah dancers will perform at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

(Grand Canyon, Arizona) - An international team of paleontologists has united to study important fossil footprints recently discovered in a remote location within Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. A large sandstone boulder contains several exceptionally well-preserved trackways of primitive tetrapods (four-footed animals) which inhabited an ancient desert environment. The 280-million-year-old fossil tracks date to almost the beginning of the Permian Period, prior to the appearance of the earliest dinosaurs.
The first scientific article reporting fossil tracks from the Grand Canyon was published in 1918, just a year before the park was established as a unit of the National Park Service. One hundred years later, during the Centennial Celebration for Grand Canyon National Park, new research on ancient footprints from the park is being presented in a scientific publication released this week. Brazilian paleontologist Dr. Heitor Francischini, from the Laboratory of Vertebrate Paleontology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, is the lead author of the new publication, working with scientists from Germany and the United States.
