(Santa Fe, New Mexico) - The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) will be closing its highly regarded exhibition, Beyond Standing Rock. The exhibit examined artistic expressions to the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) and provides a timely look – given the battle at Chaco Canyon – at similar encroachments and violations of Native American sovereignty, many of which have impacted Native health and sacred lands.

From the striking landscape, and regional architecture to native ceremony, the Southwest often proved exotic for artists who came from a predominantly eastern, Protestant background. One regional community that captured the attention and imaginations of artists was the Penitente Brotherhood.
Jemez Historic Site | Nov 19, 2019
Due to the enormous popularity of the Jemez Historic Site’s breath-taking and beloved annual holiday event, Light Among the Ruins has been expanded to two nights: Saturday Nov. 30 and Dec. 14.
During the event, the ruins of Giusewa Pueblo and San José de los Jemez Mission will be decorated with hundreds of farolitos. Each evening’s program will include traditional Native American flute music and Jemez Pueblo dancers’ performing between two illuminating bon-fires. The Historic Site will also host an arts and crafts fair and have food available for purchase.

Museum of International Folk Art | Nov 15, 2019
(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) presents Yokai: Ghosts and Demons of Japan, opening December 8, 2019 and running until January 10, 2021. The Museum of International Folk Art will be one of the first museums to present a large-scale yokai-centered exhibition in the United States. Los Luceros Historic Site | Nov 15, 2019
(Alcalde, New Mexico) - Experience the magic of northern New Mexico this Holiday season at the Lights of Los Luceros. The event takes place Saturday, Dec. 7 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Los Luceros Historic Site.
This unique nighttime event allows visitors to stroll the picturesque roads of Los Luceros lit by thousands of glowing farolitos. Entertainment includes Los Matachines de Alcalde and an Indigenous dance group who will perform throughout the evening around aromatic bonfires of piñon. Enjoy live music played on the piano in the Grand Sala of the Hacienda as well as Spanish guitarists and carolers.

Green and Thomas Leech, and a foreword by Martin Krause. The catalogue was published September 24, 2019 by Rizzoli Electa. The New Mexico Museum of Art panel discussion on the making of the book, moderated by Kate Nelson, will be held at the Museum of Art, Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The discussion will be followed by a book signing. Panelists include Gala Chamberlain, Nancy E. Green, Martin Krause, Thomas Leech, and David Skolkin.

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) – The National Hispanic Cultural Center Library and Archives has received a generous donation of 238 books and a collection of papers from the personal library of Dr. Estela Cifre de Loubriel. Considered the “First Lady of Puerto Rican Genealogy,” Estela Cifre de Loubriel’s books and collection includes research on Puerto Rican emigration, immigration, and genealogy. Many of the books were written and published in Puerto Rico. Other books include a selection of children’s primers for the classroom, storybooks, and an outstanding collection of volumes containing fairy tales, fables, folk tales and more. The books and papers will become part of the NHCC’s library, archive, and special collections.

This winter the New Mexico Museum of Art will host The birth, death and resurrection of Christ: from Michelangelo to Tiepolo on view January 25, 2020 – April 19, 2020. This traveling exhibition of more than fifty drawings and prints, organized by the British Museum from their extensive collection, tells the story of Italian art beginning with the Renaissance and ending in the 18th century through an examination of how artists have depicted the saga of Christ.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico ) – Four New Mexico museums adopt their annual winter schedule effective Monday, November, 4, 2019. The seasonal hour change will be in effect at the New Mexico Museum of Art and the New Mexico History Museum off Santa Fe Plaza; and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and Museum of International Folk Art on Museum Hill.
During winter months, all four museums are closed on Mondays. During this period, the Museum Hill Café will also be closed on Mondays.
Monday October, 28 was the final Monday opening until spring 2020.
Winter hours, Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. are in effect Nov. 4, 2019 through April 27, 2020.
Monday openings resume May 4, 2020, when the museums resumes daily operations.

Visitors to the Home on the Range exhibit at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum will learn about ranch life in the Tularosa Basin during the early 20th century, and how events taking place halfway around the world brought about changes that for many ranchers were permanent. The area eventually became White Sands Missile Range, drawing some of the world’s greatest minds in science and engineering.

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) -- The National Hispanic Cultural Center’s 2019 Community Ofrenda Exhibit will be on display in the Domenici Education Building and the Roy E. Disney Performing Arts Center Oct. 21 through Nov. 8, 2019. Each year the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) works with schools and community organizations to host an exhibit of ofrendas (altars) in celebration of Día de los Muertos. In addition to individual ofrendas, the NHCC has a community ofrenda where people are welcome to contribute items in remembrance of their loved ones.
