Downtown Santa Fe will soon have a new gathering spot for enjoying food, beverages, free wi-fi and a stunning view from an upstairs patio. The Cowden Café, opening May 20 at the New Mexico History Museum, will be operated by the historic Plaza Restaurant. The partnership between the museum and the restaurant fits into a new trend of museums as community gathering spots.
“Museums are changing,” said Dr. Frances Levine, director of the museum. “It’s not just about visiting the exhibits, it’s about being comfortable in public spaces and providing amenities to help people feel comfortable. We want our museum to be a place for the community.”

Centuries of history unfolded in Santa Fe’s downtown, and museum guides from the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors are set to resume public walking tours to share those stories with first-time tourists and longtime residents alike. Beginning April 15, every Monday-Saturday at 10:15 a.m., tours begin at the blue gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Ave. Cost is $10; children under 17 are free when accompanied by an adult. Museum guides do not accept tips. The tours continue through Oct. 15.

Art on the Edge presents the work of seven contemporary artists selected by Nicholas Baume for this biennial juried show organized by Friends of Contemporary Art (FOCA) and hosted by the New Mexico Museum of Art.
The exhibition opens Friday, April 16, 2010 and runs through August 1, 2010
Sublime horizons, water sculptures, stitched excerpts from Neruda, and adolescents in suburbia await the viewer in this show that wonders aloud, what gives art "edge"? The exhibition features Eric Tillinghast, Deborah Hamon, Erika Blumenfeld, Michael Rogers, Kate Beck, Jessica Loughlin, and Ryan Bush. This year's show marks the second edition of Art on the Edge. It was curated by Nicholas Baume, chief curator and director of the New York Public Art Fund.
The Museum will host a free public lecture by Nicholas Baume at 6:00 p.m. in St. Francis Auditorium during the opening. The Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico will host an opening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Sole Mates: Cowboy Boots and Art celebrates the art of the West and views cowboy boots as important symbols of western life. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, postcards, advertisements, sculptures, video imagery, and of course boots. The images define changing aspects of the West, from 1880 to the present. The exhibition includes more than 130 objects and pairs of boots that investigate freedom, loneliness, gender, fashion, allure and contemporary art. The exhibition opens at the New Mexico Museum of Art on Friday, May 15, 2010, and runs through October 24, 2010.

The exhibition Harry Fonseca: In the Silence of Dusk focuses on four series of paintings that explore the transformative and mythic forces that Fonseca perceived in himself and the world around him. The painting series include In the Silence of Dusk, Stone Poems, St. Francis of Assisi; and Seasons. While not a retrospective, the exhibition explores Fonseca’s body of work as it changes focus from stylized but representational studies based on his Native American heritage to more abstract explorations of his world to non-objective compositions celebrating color. All of the works in the exhibition are courtesy of the Harry Fonseca Trust. The exhibition opens at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 1:00-4:00 p.m and runs through January 2, 2011

In the mountain town of Taxco in Mexico’s state of Guerrero, large-scale mining can be dated to the sixteenth century, and silver is a way of life. In the years following the Mexican Revolution (1910–20), jewelry and other silver objects were crafted there with an entirely innovative approach, informed by modernism and the creation of a new Mexican national identity. Antonio Pineda was a member of the Taxco School and is recognized as a world-class designer. He lived a long and creative life, passing away at the age of 90 on December 14, 2009.
Nearly two hundred examples of Pineda’s acclaimed silver work will be displayed in Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda, a traveling exhibition opening at the Museum of International Folk Art June 6, 2010 through January 2, 2011. El Camino Real International Heritage Center will host its 5th annual Historic Forts Day on Saturday, February 20th, 11 am – 4 pm. The event will include living history re-enactments of soldier camp activities including bullet-making, black powder demonstration, treadle sewing, open fire and horno cooking as well as a carreta/wagon building demonstration. The event will also feature a special lecture series about forts in New Mexico courtesy of the New Mexico Historical Society. Shuttle service from Socorro will be available, 575-835-1501.

The 138 rarely-seen items in this exhibition, ranging from everyday household articles to elaborately detailed ceremonial wear, highlight the remarkable breadth and depth of this collection’s 20,000 objects. The New Mexico History Museum today unveiled a new subscription lecture series to accompany the book, Telling New Mexico: A New History. Speakers for the five-part Telling New Mexico Inaugural Lecture Series will cover a range of topics – from the earliest Spanish colonists to Blackdom to Japanese internment camps to Navajo women.

David Krakauer is a professor and faculty chair at the Santa Fe Institute, where his research includes, in part, the evolution of cultural forms, the electronic dissemination of images, and the crossover of mathematical, scientific and artistic reasoning.
Krakauer will offer a unique “window” onto the landscape works by some of the artists in the exhibition Manmade, as seen through the lens of science. His lecture will take place on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 6:00 p.m.
This is one in a series of lectures presented in conjunction with the museum’s exhibition Manmade: Notions of Landscape from the Lannan Collection.

Governor Bill Richardson today presided over groundbreaking ceremonies for the Center for New Mexico Archaeology, which will be constructed on Caja del Rio Road, off US 599/Santa Fe Bypass, across from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter.
“The irreplaceable artifacts that represent New Mexico’s past, together with the archaeologists who dig them up, will soon have a new home,” said Governor Richardson. “In a state that depends so much on history and culture to support tourism, education and quality of life, properly safeguarding our past is crucial.”

Native Couture II: Innovation and Style opens at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture on Sunday, August 30, 2009. This exhibition explores the history of Native fashion from hand-made clothing and accessories of the 1880s that influenced the development of a Santa Fe Style, to today’s contemporary Native couturiers. At its root, Indian art is the quintessential original American art. This centuries-long influence of Native American art requires the buyer, or wearer, and the American public in general to ponder the origins of a truly unique American style.

The New Mexico History Museum welcomed thousands of visitors today, May 24, 2009, to three-and-a-half floors of stories detailing centuries' worth of the stories that made the American West. By 3 p.m., an estimated 7,000 people had crossed the threshold, while dozens of others lined up outside, even during an hour-long thunderstorm.
