    The results are in, and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) has announced the winners of the 2017 NatureScapes photo competition. Each year, NMMNHS choses a theme for the photo contest that encourages contestants to examine and understand New Mexico’s natural beauty. This year’s theme - “Water” - invited photographers to explore and re-discover nature throughout the state.  Winning photographs will hang in the gallery from October 21 through January 19, 2018.

    DCA Deputy Secretary Delello Honored for Innovation & Continued Service to New Mexico Libraries

    (Santa Fe, NM) – New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Deputy Secretary Mike Delello is the recipient of the Mountain Plains Library Association’s (MPLA) Carl Gaumer Library Champion Award. The MPLA is a twelve-state association of librarians, library professionals and friends of libraries in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming.  The Carl Gaumer Library Champion Award is to be given to an individual, organization or company whose positive support of the Mountain Plains Library Association is demonstrated by repeated conscientious endeavors towards libraries, library staff, trustees, and professional activities.  Deputy Secretary Delello won the award for his innovative accomplishments and staunch library advocacy while serving as Interim State Librarian during 2014 -2015 and his continued work with libraries state-wide as the Deputy Cabinet Secretary.

    Just one month remains to see The Wonderful World of Opals at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.  This one-of-a-kind exhibit disbands after October 15.  It features cut and uncut stones from around the world, including Australia, Mexico, Ethiopia and Peru and a one-of-a-kind rough opal specimen from Australia that weighs over 160 pounds. The exhibit includes set opal jewels from guest curator Katherine Jetter’s own collection. The Australian born, Santa Fe based internationally recognized jewel designer is a GIA graduate gemologist and a leading expert in the opal industry for more than a decade.

    Farm & Ranch Museum features breed of sheep created in NM Debouillet sheep originated in southeastern NM in 1920s

    The Debouillet sheep breed originated in southeastern New Mexico, and the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces has a new display that chronicles the development of this type of sheep. The Museum also has two Debouillet ewes among its livestock collection.  Debouillet sheep were developed by the late Amos Dee (A.D.) Jones of Roswell and Tatum. In 1920, Jones began crossing Ohio Delaine rams on his herd of 5,500 Rambouillet ewes. These ewes were an exceptional herd of commercial sheep. By selective breeding, Jones produced a long-stapled, fine-wooled sheep with a large, smooth body.

    National Book Festival New Mexico and The Wolves of Currumpaw

    The New Mexico State Library has chosen The Wolves of Currumpaw, written and illustrated by William Grill, published by Flying Eye Books, as the book which will represent New Mexico in the Pavilion of the States at the 2017 National Book Festival. Mr. Grill is a London based illustrator whose main interest lies in narrative illustration and publishing. He draws most of his inspiration from the natural world, and enjoys working in colored pencils and relief printmaking. His books have won multiple awards and have been translated into more than 14 languages. Mr. Grill said, “What an amazing surprise! I am so pleased. I am so happy to have been chosen and I’m so glad The Wolves of Currumpaw has been positively received by the New Mexico State Library.”

    Farm & Ranch Museum hosts Community Appreciation Day Celebration includes 100th birthday of restored chuck wagon

    Celebrating the 100th birthday of the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum’s newly restored chuck wagon is part of the festivities for the second-annual Community Appreciation Day on Aug. 26.

    Admission is free all day at the museum in Las Cruces and activities are planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are invited to interact with living history characters, shop at the plant sale, enjoy the food vendors, or check out the animals, exhibits or vintage tractors. Children’s games are part of the activities, as well as train rides (9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for $3) and pony rides (10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. for $5).

    Demonstrations on Aug. 26 include: blacksmithing, quilting, milking (10 a.m. and 3 p.m.), colcha embroidery (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.), and wool spinning (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.).
