Women’s clothing from the 1870s to the 1930s -- what was visible and some layers that were not always visible -- is the subject of a new exhibit at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. “Dressed for the Occasion” focuses on clothing for “everyday” as well as special occasions like weddings, funerals, and baptisms. The exhibit opens with a free reception from 5-7 p.m. on April 5. Costumed interpreters will be at the reception and refreshments will be provided.

In partnership with the Friends of Coronado Historic Site and the Pueblo of Jemez, New Mexico Historic Sites is pleased to announce a new program at Jemez Historic Site, entitled “Dig Giusewa.” Running every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday between Aug. 16 and Oct. 6, archaeologists, tribal members, and volunteers will work to systematically excavate a five-by-five-meter area just north of the Visitor Center.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs mobile museum Wonder on Wheels (WoW) is on the road with a new display for 2018. The featured exhibit from the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) is entitled Indigenous New Mexico: Sharing the Wonders of Our World. Among the venues WoW visits in the next few weeks are Jemez Pueblo and the Roundhouse.
Students and teachers at Jemez Day School will get a chance to experience the MIAC exhibit when the retrofitted RV visits Jemez Pueblo. WoW will be at Jemez Day School, 245 Day School Road, Jemez Pueblo Tuesday, March 27, from 8:15-9:45 a.m.
Lawmakers, legislative staff, and the public are invited to visit Wonders on Wheels Monday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. when it will be parked on Don Gaspar outside the State Capitol building

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – During 160 years in operation, Fort Stanton’s served as an Army post, tuberculosis sanatorium, internment camp and correctional facility. With infamy gained through the Lincoln County Wars, and the lives of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett, the history of Lincoln, New Mexico is riddled with acts of revenge, vigilante justice and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886, more than 50 people met a violent end along the main road.
Reports of paranormal activity in these two storied southeastern New Mexico Historic Sites dates back more than a century. Spine-tingling tales from former workers and people who have had unusual experiences at these and other New Mexico venues are being preserved by the Lincoln County Paranormal Society (LCPS).

(Albuquerque, NM) – Evidence for water-deposited sedimentary rocks discovered on Mars by the NASA Rovers, and small iron concretions called ‘blueberries’ found on the Red Planet, will be discussed by University of Utah professor, Marjorie A. Chan, Ph.D. She will also discuss the water-deposited sedimentary rocks that occur here in New Mexico and other parts of the Southwest.
The lecture is Wednesday January 31 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the museum. General admission tickets for the lecture are $7, ($6 members, $4 students). Cannupa Hanska Luger (Mandan Hidatsa/Arikara/Lakota) will be at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture on Saturday, February 24, 2018, for a day of making beads with the community.
The beads, 2”x 2” in size, are needed to complete a monumental beaded portrait which will be created by Luger from a photograph taken by First Nations photographer Kali Spitzer (Lower Post, British Columbia). This community collaboration acknowledges missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, queer, and trans people. In Canada alone, the number of missing and murdered indigenous women was at 4,096 in 2016, as noted in research gathered by the Native Women’s Association of Canada.
