Let’s Take a Look
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

On January 12th, MIAC staff are returning to the museum’s virtual lobby to look at your treasures. Bring a weaving, ceramic pot, piece of jewelry (or something else!) to our Zoom meeting, and curator of ethnology Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo), curator of archaeological research collections Julia Clifton, other staff members will attempt to identify and explain the item. Curators are experts in items from the Southwest, but are willing to take a look at anything that is “brought in.” Previous attendees have often found that the experience of chatting with a group of curators is often just as, or perhaps even more, informative and enjoyable than the identification of the object. Please note that federal and state policies prohibit curators from appraising an item; the museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art.

Sam Adams: An African American Civil War Veteran and his New Mexican Life

Please join Hannah Abelbeck, Photo Archivist, with the New Mexico History Museum, for an online talk featuring Sam Adams, an African American Civil War veteran who later settled in New Mexico, as part of our Friends of History lecture series.

The presentation will put Adams in context with his contemporaries and explores the difficulty of looking for information about minor and overlooked historical figures whose stories usually aren’t center stage.

Hannah Abelbeck is the Photo Archivist in the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives department at the New Mexico History Museum. She has a BA in English and Art History from the University of Kansas and an MA in English from Penn State University, and she’s worked with special collections archives at both universities. She researches Southwestern (especially New Mexican) photographers, documentary and vernacular photography, cultural movements, and histories of gender and sexuality. At NMHM, she is working on increasing digital access to the museum’s vast photo collections.

Student Art Exhibition | Exposición de Arte Estudiantil
Museum of International Folk Art
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

As part of our School Partnership with El Camino Real Academy School, students’ artworks are featured as a collaborative exhibition. For the past month, students learned about folk art traditions found in the Alexander Girard Wing. Some students had the opportunity to meet contemporary santero Arthur Lopez to learn about his artistic practice and iconography. In response to learning about diverse folk art traditions students explored themes of community, storytelling, and symbolic imagery in their artwork.

We encourage you to come see our young artists’ artwork at the museum. The exhibition will be on view from March 10th through 27th in the Museums Atrium

Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs

Please join us for our exhibition opening of Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs.

Admission is free today from 5pm-7pm, and Lite Refreshments will be served from 5pm-6pm.

This exhibition explores well-known resorts as well as lesser-known hot springs. Ponce de Leon, Montezuma, and Faywood are a few among many areas whose history will be addressed. The nearly 90 photographs range from the late 19th century through the 1980s and document the evolution of how many of these springs were used and developed. Museum visitors will also see the stark change in how people dressed (or not) when they visited and enjoyed these hot springs. New Mexico attracted many people seeking respite from tuberculosis and other ailments, and they typically frequented hot springs to aid in this relief. Exhibit opening is admission free. The exhibition runs March 18 - September 4, 2022.

Stories, Memories, and Legacies: The Santa Fe Internment Camp and its Historical Marker 20th Anniversary Commemoration
New Mexico History Museum
10:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Located on a hill at the Frank S. Ortiz Park in Santa Fe, NM, stands a stone Marker, placed there April 20, 2002, commemorating the Santa Fe Internment Camp (SFIC). Established in March of 1942, the camp interned over 4,500 Japanese immigrant men, making it one of America’s largest prison camps for resident aliens in the United States during WWII. Please join the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) and the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League for an in-person/virtual symposium which will include speakers, theatrical performances by the JACL Players, short films, and panel discussions to commemorate the events and (SFIC) Marker. Speakers aspire to inform and remind attendees of the historical existence of the U.S. Justice Department internment camp on the site of the present Casa Solana neighborhood, to memorialize the experience of thousands of Japanese immigrants and American-born citizens unjustly incarcerated there between 1942 and 1946, as well as celebrate the courage of the Santa Fe community in the resolution of the Marker controversy. A related three-part  exhibition will be on display in the NMHM from April 9 through April 30.

Spring Letters From the Reservation
Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner

Spring Letters from the Reservation is a collection of archival letters and oral histories from Fort Sumner Historic Site that describes the mindset of the United States Government towards Tribal polices in the American Southwest and the daily tribulations experienced by the Diné (Navajo) and the Ndé (Mescalero Apache) in the months of March through May (1863-1868) while held captive on the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation.  These spring letters and oral histories, read in chronological order by people from around the United States, reveals a micro-history of the failed experiment that was Fort Sumner and a moment in history when humanity was lost.

Ancestral Inspiration Painted Reflection Isomeric Design in Ancestral Pueblo Pottery

Lorraine Gala Lewis is a potter who is known for gaining inspiration from Ancestral Pueblo motifs, shapes, and styles. In discussing her work with King Galleries, Lewis says, “I delved into this and began collecting materials, visiting museums, and viewing private collections, focusing on works dating from 850 ad to 1200 AD . Studying these early art forms led to rediscovering our ancestral lands; these visits enhanced my creativity. The stories of our early paintings, petroglyphs and rock carvings made me pay closer attention to detail.

From the ancient weird energy of mononoke to the rise of yokai in the Edo period, Japanese storytellers have a well of frights to draw on. Kabuki artists like Tsuruya Namboku IV spun ancient folklore into modern stories. Ukiyo-e artists like Yoshitoshi Tsukioka amped up the gore and writers like Ryunosuke Akutagawa refined the shock into terror. This is the inheritance of horror that modern manga artists have continued to build upon. ‘Ge-Ge-Ge no Kitaro’ artist Shigeru Mizuki was one of the first to use Japan’s folkloric past in manga, followed by second-wave artists like Hideshi Hino and Tsunezo Murotani and modern artists like Junji Ito. Learn more about this legacy of horror!

Photo-Historian Anne Wilkes Tucker Lecture
New Mexico Museum of Art
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Eminent photo-historian Anne Wilkes Tucker, curator emerita of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will give a lecture on Friday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m., in the St. Francis Auditorium. Speaking in conjunction with the exhibition Transgressions and Amplifications: Mixed-media Photography of the 1960s and 1970s, Tucker will address the challenges of being female in the art world in the 1970s and discuss various image series and limited-edition books of artists Joan Lyons, Bea Nettles, and Marcia Resnick. Each woman used their own lives to tell very different stories of home turf, dreams, memories and urban fiction.  The lecture, “Not Women Artists, Artists,” also anticipates the fiftieth anniversary of Tucker’s groundbreaking 1973 publication The Woman’s Eye, a study of 100 photographs created by ten twentieth century women photographers. The book’s texts provide biographical information while raising questions including whether it is possible to locate gender in the authorship of a photograph and how the artists addressed prevailing challenges to establish their right to artistic ambition and careers. “It’s an interesting moment to revisit the book,” Tucker said. “Women are now well represented in the field as artists, curators, and historians, but history has shown that inclusiveness and parity are not guaranteed.”

Painted Reflections: Isomeric Design in Ancestral Pueblo Pottery

Lorraine Gala Lewis is a potter who is known for gaining  inspiration from Ancestral Pueblo motifs, shapes, and styles. In discussing her work with King Galleries, Lewis  says, “I delved into this and began collecting materials, visiting museums, and viewing private collections, focusing  on works dating from 850 ad to 1200 AD. Studying these  early art forms led to rediscovering our ancestral lands; these visits enhanced my creativity. The stories of our early paintings, petroglyphs and rock carvings made me pay closer attention to detail.

Free with museum admission.

The Magic of Mexico: The Joys, Celebrations and Rituals of Daily Life
Museum of International Folk Art
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The Friends of Folk Art will have a travel photography slide presentation and lecture with David Saxe in the Vernick Auditorium. The photographs were made over several years during the events and activities surrounding the annual Pilgrimage of the Virgin of Guadalupe from Puebla to Mexico City, and local celebrations in smaller villages in the Sierra Norte. Although not entirely about the “Pilgrimage”, the photographs serve as a stepping stone to document the culture, rituals, magic, and daily life of the Mexican people. This will not be an anthropology lecture; it will be more about the process of making good photographs—by getting closer to your subject and sharing their experiences. Guadalupe only serves as a starting point in getting there.

Doors open at 2 pm and reception will follow.  Masks are preferred.

Registration is free for FOFA Members.  All participants must be current Friends of Folk Art (FOFA) members.  To join, please go to: https://www.museumfoundation.org/friends/friends-of-folk-art/

Hair Weaving Workshop with Karen Keenan
Museum of International Folk Art
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Scandianavian hair weaving expert, teacher & scholar Karen Keenan presents a 2 hour workshop on the  Gimping Technique.

One of 4 traditional sentimental era hairwork techniques, gimping was widely used to create handcrafted items such as brooches, gift cards, and for home adornments such as framed and hung hair wreaths. It and other hairwork techniques became less commonly made after the early 1900’s. Class participants will learn this technique by making multiple gimped strands with synthetic hair and wire. Shaped strands will then be attached to a card to keep or give to a friend or loved one.

To register for the free workshop email: leslie.fagre@state.nm.us

The workshop is restricted to 12 participants, but there will also be a waiting list if necessary.
