Former Addict Turned Neuroscientist Offers Insight on Addiction

New York Times Best Selling author and neuroscientist Dr. Judith Grisel will discuss the root causes of drug addiction and her own personal journey to recovery.  Dr. Judith Grisel was a daily drug user and college dropout when she became determined to find a cure for her addiction. After studying the brain for 25 years as a neuroscientist she shares her knowledge with the public.  Her book “Never Enough” reveals her personal insights about how drugs work, how they impact the brain, and the way to combat addiction. Grisel describes what drove her to addiction and what helped her recover.

Dr. Grisel is a behavioral neuroscientist with an expertise in pharmacology. Her genetics research focuses on determining the root causes of drug addiction. She is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science will offer a public lecture on August 23rd from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m in the Dyna Theater. Dr. Grisel’s book “Never Enough” will be available for purchase. Guests can also get a copy of the book signed by the author. Tickets are available at nmnaturalhistory.org. The cost is $8 for adults, $7 for members and $5 for students. Preregistration is encouraged. Tickets can be purchased at the door the evening of the event, if seats are available.

More than one in 5 people over the age of fourteen suffer from substance abuse. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History’s exhibit “Drugs: Costs and Consequences” shows how drug abuse impacts individual lives as well as entire communities. The exhibit is included with regular admission to the museum. Visitors will have a chance to see the exhibit” Drugs: Costs and Consequences” until December 8, 2019.

Grisel will offer insight into how we can solve the epidemic of substance abuse at a reception and lecture on August 22nd from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Museum. The event will include an appetizer reception with remarks by the author. There will be a book signing for “Never Enough.” Tickets can be purchased at naturalhistoryfoundation.org for $40. “The Drugs: Cost and Consequences” exhibit will be open at 5:30pm prior to the event.
