On display at the Governor’s Gallery, located on the fourth floor of the New Mexico State Capitol, is History Where It Happened – New Mexico Historic Sites.

New Mexico’s Historic Sites tell the story of our state. The exhibit displays eight unique stories from areas where the past becomes real; must-see stops for visitors to learn about New Mexico’s diverse, rich, and vibrant history.  New Mexico Historic Sites offers guests a deeper understanding of groups and individuals who shaped our state and culture into what it is today.

Summer is a great time to explore New Mexico. Experiencing the History Where It Happened – New Mexico Historic Sites display is the best way to prepare to embark on your New Mexico vacation. Visitors to the exhibition will hear fascinating stories and see enchanting images of these historic sites. The sites are located throughout the state—ranging from Jemez in the north to several in the Las Cruces area— each within driving distance of nearly every New Mexican destination.

Two historic sites hold signature summer events in August. Lincoln Historic Site hosts “Old Lincoln Days” the weekend of August 7 to 9 with living history reenactments, tours, parades, and pageants; and Sunday, August 9, Jemez Historic Site will hold its 12th annual Pueblo Independence Day Celebration. Additionally, throughout this year Coronado Historic Site will celebrate its 75th anniversary.

For more information on events, hours, admission costs, driving directions, and itineraries that include nearby attractions, check out the Historic Sites online at http://www.nmmonuments.org, or call Lincoln Historic Site at 575-653-4372,  Fort Selden  at (575) 647-0421, or Jemez at (575) 829-3530.

The Governor’s Gallery is an outreach facility of the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Department of Cultural Affairs. The gallery presents an average of six exhibitions per year including the annual Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.  It is located in the lobby of the Office of the Governor on the 4th floor of the State Capitol on Old Santa Fe Trail and is free to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00a.m. to 5:00pm.
