Check out what’s new in March at the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors:

Friday, March 6, 6 pm, Free First Friday Evening Talk, “New Mexico Women’s Clubs: Civic Pioneers”

As a women’s club movement swept the nation at the turn of the last century, New Mexico was changed—for the better. Throughout the state, various women’s clubs took up the tasks of “municipal housekeeping,” creating libraries and health care systems while teaching members lasting skills of leadership. Celebrate Women’s History Month with an auditorium talk by historian Pat Farr, who has researched the largely ignored contributions of women whose work lives on today.

Farr speaks at 6 pm; museum admission is free to everyone from 5–8 pm.

Wednesday, March 11, noon, Brainpower & Brownbags Lecture, “Black Pioneers on Route 66”

In the Jim Crow era, black tourists experienced a different kind of Route 66 than the one remembered in story and song. Frank Norris, a historian for the National Park Service, National Trails Intermountain Region, in Santa Fe, shares his research during a casual talk in the Meem Community Room. Enter for free through the History Museum’s Washington Avenue doors.

Sunday, March 15, 2 pm, 18th-century harpsichord music

As part of the exhibition Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World, Susan Patrick, an associate professor emerita of music at the University of New Mexico, performs and discusses music from Italy, Germany and France. The performance, in the History Museum auditorium, is free with admission. Sundays are free to NM residents. Children 16 and under are free daily.

Sunday, March 29, 2 pm, film screening: Sweet Georgia Brown

African-American women had to fight for the right to serve in World War II, and their contributions have gone largely ignored. Until now. See the New Mexico premiere of Sweet Georgia Brown: Impact, Courage, Sacrifice and Will, a documentary by Lawrence E. Walker of PureHistory Films. A celebration of National Women’s History Month, the event will include remarks by Walker; retired Army Brigadier Gen. Jack R. Fox, secretary of the state Department of Veterans Services; and Lt. Col. Pam Gaston, representing Women Veterans of New Mexico, a nonprofit organization providing support services.

The event is free with museum admission. Sundays are free to NM residents. Seating is limited.

To make a reservation for this event, call 505-476-5152.
