Repeat after me

Exhibition of contemporary prints from the collection

January 13 – April 22, 2012

(Santa Fe, NM)—The New Mexico Museum of Art exhibition Repeat After Me assembles more than twenty contemporary prints that make use of repetition—as process and as image. A print, by definition, is a reproducible image: multiple prints can be made from a single plate. Repetition is seen also in these prints as visual motifs such as a line, a figure, or a geometric form such as a square, flower, or circle.

The lithographs and silkscreens that are in Repeat After Me are primarily from the museum’s permanent collection, which includes nearly 3,500 prints. The small selection in this exhibition reflects New Mexico’s vibrant community in printmaking, with print workshops such as Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque and Landfall Press in Santa Fe, among many other smaller shops and practitioners and collectors of the medium. Artists featured in the exhibition, from New Mexico and beyond, include Garo Antreasian, Polly Apfelbaum, Charles Arnoldi, Frederick Hammersley, Joyce Kozloff, Sol LeWitt, Wes Mills, Sheryl Oring, Donald Sultan, and Marie Watt, among others.

In-gallery educational components of the exhibition include an award-winning video, “Four Stones for Kanemitsu,” which documents the creation of a color lithograph by artist Matsumi Kanemitsu, produced by Tamarind Institute; and a lithographic printing stone by artist William Wiley loaned by Landfall Press.

###

The New Mexico Museum of Art was founded in 1917 as the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico. Housed in a spectacular Pueblo Revival building designed by I. H. and William M. Rapp, it was based on their New Mexico building at the Panama-California Exposition (1915). The museum's architecture inaugurated what has come to be known as "Santa Fe Style." For nearly 100 years, the Museum has celebrated the diversity of the visual arts and the legacy of New Mexico as a cultural crossroads by collecting and exhibiting work by leading artists from New Mexico and elsewhere. This tradition continues today with a wide array of exhibitions with work from the world’s leading artists. The New Mexico Museum of Art brings the art of New Mexico to the world and the art of the world to New Mexico.

The New Mexico Museum of Art is a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
