Aurelia Gomez, Director of Education at the Museum of International Folk Art has been recognized by the New Mexico Art Education Association as the Museum Educator of the Year for her inspiring work as an arts educator.
Gomez coordinates the museum’s highly successful outreach programs introducing audiences of all ages to diverse international cultural traditions. She is the author of Crafts of Many Cultures and has written and coordinated the publication of numerous K – 12 curricula based on MOIFA’s exhibitions. Arts Alive!, Day of the Dead, Winter Celebration and other annual programs she has conceived are highly popular and attended by many. Gomez' has shared her innovative programming style with the community since joining the museum in 1995.
Her approach to cultural education is inclusive and she says of her work; “I like to think about art making as a problem solving process. It’s a lot like math in that respect, except that there is more than one answer to the question.”
Gomez earned her MA in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from the Bank Street College of Education and her BA from Oberlin.
The New Mexico Art Education Association, whose mission is to advance and enhance quality art education within our state, is the state division of the National Art Education Association.
