The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC), in partnership with the U.S. National Archives Office of Innovation, is pleased to announce an online launch event  of the Indigenous Digital Archive’s Treaties Explorer, also known as “DigiTreaties.” Thanks to an anonymous donor, the U.S. National Archives has been able to conserve and make the first-ever scans of its holdings of 374 Ratified Indian Treaties.

The online launch event will feature three live broadcasts of “How-To” workshops with Professor Sherri Thomas (Taos Pueblo) of the University of New Mexico School of Law. All broadcasts will take place on October 12 (Indigenous Peoples Day ) on the MIAC Facebook Page.

“This project brings together online resources that are needed to get at what U.S. treaties with Native nations relate to what places and what people. It’s surprising how complicated these histories are, or that there’s actually no official list of the U.S. Treaties with our Indigenous nations,” said Dr. Anna Naruta-Moya, who is the project director of the Indigenous Digital Archive, a MIAC Research Associate, and curator at the New Mexico History Museum.

Below is a schedule of the online workshops:

Workshop“Treaties – What Are They?”
Time: 1 p.m. MDT

Workshop“Treaties – Historical Context”
Time: 3 p.m. MDT

Workshop: “Research You Can Do with the Indigenous Digital Archive’s Treaties Explorer”
Time: 6 p.m. MDT
Link to Accesshttp://www.facebook.com/IndianArtsCulture

The workshops are introduced by conversations between MIAC’s Director Della Warrior and Professor Sherri Thomas, followed by a live online Q&A with Professor Thomas.

MIAC’s Indigenous Digital Archive treaties project was funded in a sponsored partnership by the National Archives Foundation, thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor. The Indigenous Digital Archive is supported by two IMLS National Leadership Grants, a Knight Foundation Prototyping Grant, a collaborative Digitizing Hidden Collections grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), a Digital Knowledge Sharing Fellowship from the American Philosophical Society Library, the New Mexico Historical Records Advisory Board (NMHRAB), and the San Francisco Community Foundation.

The Indigenous Digital Archive’s Treaties Explorer launches on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, October 12, 2020, at DigiTreaties.org.
