Black troopers known as Buffalo Soldiers from Fort Stanton played a key role in the transition of New Mexico from a territory into a state. In recognition of the site’s significance to Black History, the National Park Service recently added the Fort Stanton Historic Site to its Reconstruction Era National Historic Network. The site joins 107 listings across 28 states that highlight Black stories from the last half of the nineteenth century.

That economic activity–$267.5 million in spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and $473.4 million in event-related spending by their audiences–supported 9,381 jobs and generated $106.1 million in local, state, and federal government revenue.
