Gustave Baumann. Woodcut. 1939
Baumann reconfigured and redesigned images from his book Frijoles Canyon Pictographs published that year. The images in the book, with one exception, are accurate drawings of pictographs in Frijoles Canyon in Bandelier National Monument. In that exception Baumann added a hat to an existing figure with the comment, “The ten-gallon hat is my contribution, for certainly a Navaho goatherd able to play a flute obligato to his flock is entitled to wear one.”
