Japanese Mask Making Demonstrations with Ichiyu Terai
Museum of International Folk Art
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Join us for Japanese mask making demonstrations with noh mask maker Terai Ichiyu on June 1-4 in the Atrium.  A translator will be on hand to facilitate conversation with Mr. Terai.

Terai-san likens mask making to "time travel" explaining that when he creates a character, he feels connected to the generations of mask-makers who have crafted the same character before him. In creating a powerful mask sucha as a hannya, Terai senses her energy, enabling him to help the mask express its complex set of emotions: ferocious rage, fear and sadness.

EnchantOrama! New Mexico Magazine Celebrates 100

Visit us for FREE Admission as we celebrate Art and History every first Friday evening of every month! For this month, the History Museum invites you to enjoy our newest exhibition, EnchantOrama! New Mexico Magazine Celebrates 100, which explores how the publication began and its impact on the State over the years. Join Education staff for a hands-on activity to design your own custom magazine layout with photos cut from duplicate NM Magazines to create a keepsake of your experience at the museum.

Learn why and how the publication began, view a selection from over one thousand magazine covers, and enjoy seeing over two hundred photographs published in the magazine since 1923. Visitors will enjoy a mid-century office space—replete with a rotary telephone—as they peruse previous editions of the magazine or type up an article on a 1970s typewriter.

The Palace Avenue First Friday Art Walk takes place every month with some of our additional museum and gallery friends located along Palace Avenue in the heart of the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Each month we will highlight something new and wonderful to share. Together, we hope to educate, inspire, and encourage a love and appreciation of history and the diversity of art that the city different is so well known for.

Large Scale Alebrijes Coming to Milner Plaza | Meet and Greet the Artists
Museum of International Folk Art
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Seven large-scale alebrijes or whimsical creature sculptures inspired by Mexican folklore will be installed on Milner Plaza on Museum Hill from June 14-16 as a summer extension of the exhibition, La Cartonería Mexicana / The Mexican Art of Paper and Paste, at the Museum of International Folk Art. The sculptures will be on display until early October. This project is in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage.

The installation on Milner Plaza will take place with help from two of the six Mexico City artists, Alejandro Camacho Barrera and Miriam Camancho, and the Artistic Director of this project, Fernando Ramirez from the Mexican Cultural Center Du Page.

Please join us on Thursday, June 15 from 3 to 5 pm in front of the Museum of International Folk Art to see the installation in progress and meet the artists from Mexico City. The other artists represented in this display from Mexico City are Perla Miriam Salgado Zamorano, Alberto Moreno Fernández, and Edgar Israel Camargo Reyes.

We would also like to give a special tribute to Edwina and Charles Milner, who together were the lead donors for Milner Plaza, a 32-acre renovation project that created a beautiful public space for four world-class museums on Museum Hill where numerous programs like this have taken place.

We are especially grateful to Los Amigos del Arte Popular, Friends of Folk Art, International Folk Art Foundation and donors to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Exhibition Development Fund for making this exhibition and outdoor installation possible.

Let’s Take A Look with Curators
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Every Third Wednesday of the Month

During Let’s Take a Look, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology wait in the lobby to look at your treasures. They will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. While our curators prefer to work with objects from the Southwest, they are willing to take a look at anything you might bring in. If they cannot identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can! Sometimes, the lively discussion among curators may provide as much insight as an accurate object identification itself.

The event is always free and open to the public, but please note Federal and State regulations prohibit the monetary appraisal of objects.

Art Exhibit, Naaldeeh, at Bosque Redondo Memorial Now Open
Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

In partnership with New Mexico Arts, from May 13th through June 24th, Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site hosted its second 6-week Artist in Residence Program. Artists provided one public engagement at a designated date during their residency and delivered one agreed upon work of art at the close of their residency. The second Artist in Residence featured Dakota Mace, Diné. For her residency, Ms. Mace collaborated with a group of her graduate students including Daisy Trudell-Mills and Kéyah Keenan Henry and displayed their new exhibition titled Naaldeeh.  This exhibition is multidisciplinary and mixed media that displays the artist’s thoughts and feelings on their ancestors experience, as well as their own experience of being back at Hweéldi (the place of suffering).

According to Ms. Mace: "The installation is intended to last for a short period, as the physical photographs being created will eventually go back into the land.  I see these photographs as brief glimpses from our ancestors, a chance to share their imprint and eventually go back to rest."  Naaldeeh opened in the Memorial Resource Room on June 23rd and will remain through the end of the year.  Please visit this powerful exhibit yourself and support the arts.
