Gravity-defying planetarium show comes to NMMMHS during Balloon Fiesta
New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science

New Mexico residents and visitors will have a new way to explore the skies during the week of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, as the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) hosts Part 2 of the gravity-defying planetarium show Over New Mexico and the Southwest

What: A few years ago, New Mexico pilot Jeff Gilkey mounted a GoPro Fusion 360 camera on the wingtip of his ultralight trike aircraft, creating footage that explores the obscure and scenic wonders of New Mexico and neighboring states. Over New Mexico and the Southwest was born.

Gilkey soon realized there was only one place that could adequately display these extremely immersive videos: the 55-foot planetarium dome at NMMNHS. In collaboration with planetarium staff, Gilkey has created the ultimate aerial tour.

Part 1 was shown at the NMMNHS Planetarium in May to capacity crowds. Part 2 showcases even more natural wonders, including Valles Caldera, Shiprock Peak, and southern Utah’s canyonlands, including the San Juan Goosenecks, Monument Valley, Green River Canyon, and Goblin Valley. When: Showings will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3; Wednesday, Oct. 5; and Friday, Oct. 7. Admission is by donation with the purchase of a Museum ticket.

Where: Over New Mexico and the Southwest- Part 2 will be shown exclusively in the NMMNHS Planetarium.

Why: There’s no bad time to explore New Mexico’s natural wonders from a new perspective, but taking to the skies during Balloon Fiesta offers a unique opportunity!
