ArtWorks Year End Celebration
New Mexico Museum of Art

SANTA FE, NM – Art has the power to transcend many challenges, even a pandemic. The Partners in Education Foundation for the Santa Fe Public Schools (Partners) and the New Mexico Museum of Art (NMMA) are celebrating that power with an exhibit of student artwork and poetry created during this school year.

The exhibit, “ArtWorks Works!,” will feature more than 50 works including visual art and poetry created by students from seven Santa Fe public schools. The student works will be on display in the courtyard of the New Mexico Museum of Art, 107 W. Palace Avenue, on Friday, May 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Entry is free; masks are optional.

Students in Partners’ ArtWorks program were inspired to create their own works after viewing the exhibits “Poetic Justice: Judith F. Baca, Mildred Howard, and Jaune Quick-To-See Smith” and “Storytellers: Narrative Art and the West” at NMMA, and “#mask: Creative Responses to the Global Pandemic” at the Museum of International Folk Art. Poems were created after students enjoyed a reading from Santa Fe Poet Laureate Darryl Lorenzo Wellington.

ArtWorks, a program of the Partners in Education Foundation for the Santa Fe Public Schools, provides arts programming, including classroom workshops with trained Teaching Artists, field trips to museums and performances, and a series of poetry readings.

Since its creation in 2001, ArtWorks has grown to serve 73 teachers and 1,800 students annually. ArtWorks partners closely with the Santa Fe Public Schools, arts organizations, artists and other stakeholders to build a bridge between Santa Fe’s arts community and schools. Based on the Lincoln Center Institute model of integrative arts learning, ArtWorks provides hands-on and process-oriented experiences with art. Students participate and learn by making art, viewing live performances and exhibits, and inquiring and reflecting on these experiences. The ArtWorks program is open to teachers from pre-K to eighth grade in the Santa Fe Public Schools. In the midst of the pandemic, this connection to community and creative expression is more important than ever. During the 2021-2022 school year, ArtWorks adjusted its model to provide virtual field trips in order to continue connecting students to world-class art and local artists.

The Partners in Education Foundation has been raising funding and other resources to support teachers in the Santa Fe Public Schools for more than 34 years. ArtWorks is supported by the City of Santa Fe Arts & Culture Department, Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry, Susan K. Black Foundation, Melville Hankins Foundation, New Mexico Arts, and the Santa Fe Community Foundation, along with the support of many private donors.
